Parenting Flashcard #15

Parenting Flashcards

At my baby shower we played a game where we had to guess what the term from a parenting flashcard meant. The person who got the most terms right won! It was a pretty fun game! I'm sharing these cards with you so get ready to be educated! I'm on flashcard number 15 today!

Today's term: stay-at-home

stay-at-home n: a parent who relinquishes paid, outside work to care for the children and the house - syn: SAHM, SAHD, homemaker, housewife, househusband - see also: office fantasies, resentment, grass is greener, nanny envy, telecommute, stay-at-work

used in a sentence: When I grow up, I was to be a stay-at-home just like my dad.

Any stay-at-homes out there? I'm a stay at home mom and I absolutely love it!

Mid-Week Munchies: Dealing with Picky Eaters

Ok, so I don't have personal experience with a picky eater yet! My baby girl nurses and so far I've introduced her to rice cereal, sweet potatoes, carrots, and peas. She took to all these foods pretty quickly. She was most hesitant with the peas. She had a rather frightened expression when she got her first mouthful, but she ended up eating a lot!

I was browsing BabyCenter.com to find a good topic for this week's Mid-Week Munchies and I thought this article on how to handle a picky eater was informative and practicial. Before I dive in, I have to tell you about a show I saw on TV where a lady ate literally nothing except french fries! Breakfast, lunch, and dinner was french fries! She was addicted and had to get professional help. Well it turns out she had a medical condition where she was hyper-sensitive to taste and couldn't handle anything except french fries. Something like only 1 in 1 million people have it. Weird, huh? Well, hopefully your child isn't that picky!

Here are some of the pointers for dealing with picky eaters. You can read the full article here.
  • Provide a variety of healthy food for your child at each meal. Keep in mind that it may take several exposures for a child to take to a new food. Don't make a big deal about a new food. Just put it on the table and offer it.
  • Serve child sized portions.
  • Don't give your child every option at meal time. Instead of asking them what they want for dinner, give them a couple options to choose from.
  • At each meal include something familiar and something new.
  • Present new foods in small quantities. If your child likes it, then they can ask for more. This will allow them to feel more in control.
  • If your child will not try something new after several attempts, then don't offer it for a week or two and try again. They may totally change their mind by that time!
  • Let your child be involved in food decisions. Include them while shopping at the grocery store and let them help prepare food. This will help them feel in control of what they eat.
  • Look for ways to boost the nutritional value of foods your child enjoys. Add some fruit to their cereal or lean meat to their grilled cheese.
  • Teach your child about good nutrition. Tell them how the healthy food they eat will help them to jump higher and get stronger.
  • Don't indulge your child's pickiness.

Have you dealt with a picky eater? What did you do?
