Make Smart Coupon Choices
There is a lot of itty bitty fine print on coupons, and not all coupons have the same rules! I want to share with you how to decode the fine print and some do's and don'ts of couponing!
Don't:
- Scan, copy or print more than the alotted number of printable coupons a website allows
- Decode bar codes (a practice by which shoppers use a coupon to buy an entirely different product). Just because you can scan a coupon doesn't mean it's legal to do so!
- Use expired coupons unless the store allows it.
- Buy coupons. Most coupons have a clause that makes them void if transferred. I personally don't think there's anything wrong with sharing coupons with friends, but I would never purchase them from a clipping service or sell them.
Do:
- Read the fine print. Make sure you follow the terms and condition printed on the coupon. Here are some common phrases and what they mean:
- Limit one coupon or offer per guest - you can only use one coupon on each visit to the store.
- Limit one coupon per item/per purchase - you can use one coupon for every item you purchase. For example, if you buy 5 items, then you can use 5 matching coupons.
- Limit 4 like coupons per transaction - you can use a max of 4 coupons for every transaction. If you have more than 4 of the same coupons, then you will need to break your items into separate transactions.
- Void if altered, transferred, purchased, sold or prohibited by law - You are not supposed to sell or purchase your coupons.
- DND - Do not double. Some stores choose to make exceptions to this rule. It is up to the store.
